Prayer Request

I understand that life in Iraq is very difficult to bear right now.

Our troops need our prayers for strength, endurance and safety.

"Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands.

Protect them as they protect us.

64 Ways to Practice Nonviolence

You are invited to open your heart during these 64 days of A Season For Nonviolence and actively become part of your community by offering your help and your talent to others. Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Cesar Chavez all showed us that one person can make a tremendous difference in the world. The time is now, and we are the people.

We learn to practice nonviolence one step at a time, one choice at a time, one day at a time. This is how each of us, in our own way, move the world in the direction of peace. If it was up to me, there would be 365 days a year dedicated to A Season For Nonviolence.

DAY 1 Jan. 30: The practice for today is COURAGE.

"I can shake off everything if I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn."
-Anne Frank

When you discover that everyone is contained in you and you are contained in everyone, you have then realized the unity of life. You realize you are not just a person, you are a beneficial force. Wherever you go, wherever you live, those around you will benefit from your life. Even when one unassuming man or woman in a community has the courage to lead a nonviolent life, she will make her contribution, and she will slowly inspire others to make the same contribution, because human nature responds to such an example.

When we can say, "Whatever comes, I will not be afraid because the divine Self is within me," then this resoluteness and faith will enable us to work free from tension, agitation, and fear of defeat. The person who works in this way is at peace, because he or she is not anxious about results.

Today: I will light a candle to symbolize my commitment to accept the courage to practice 64 Ways of living nonviolently.

DAY 2 Jan 31: The practice for today is SMILING. Buddhist teacher Thich Nhat Hanh said "If, in our daily life, we can smile . . . not only we, but everyone will profit from it. This is the most basic kind of peace work." A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in business, and is the countersign of friendship and nonviolence. A smile not only improves our looks, it improves our outlook, and when our outlook improves, it is much easier to be at peace.

Today: I will share a sincere smile with everyone I meet, knowing that my smile contributes to peace.

DAY 3 Feb. 1: The practice for today is APPRECIATION. Author Louise Hay says "Praise yourself as much as you can . . . The love in our lives begins with us . . . Loving yourself will help heal this planet." Peace in the world begins inside each person. Appreciating who I am raises my awareness of nonviolence.

Life is filled with opportunities to express appreciation, yet how many times do we pass up the opportunity thinking "oh, I'll tell them later." When we tell someone that we appreciate them, we are promoting nonviolence.

Today: I will write down ten things that I appreciate about myself and my life. I will tell at least one other person what I appreciate about them.

DAY 4 Feb. 2: The practice for today is CARING. According to Peter McWilliams, "Nonviolence toward the self is caring for oneself. Self love is a crowning sense of self worth; it is what the Greeks call reverence for the self."

When I regard my life as a trust, I realize that the first resource I have to take care of is myself. This can be startling! Even my body is not really my own - it belongs to life, and it is my responsibility to take care of it. Taking care of it is a demonstration of nonviolence.

Today: I will make a list of at least five ways that I can take care of myself, physically, mentally, emotionally, and I will honor that list today through demonstration.

DAY 5 Feb. 3: The practice for today is BELIEVING. Author Wayne Dyer writes about the impact that our beliefs have on our daily lives. Believe that you have all the resources you need to move your life in the direction of peace, happiness and nonviolence. Believe that you can be peaceful all day. Say to yourself "I am peaceful, I practice nonviolence."

Today: I will write what I believe about nonviolence. I will create an "I Believe in Nonviolence" t-shirt, bumper sticker, song, or art, and be aware of the simple demonstrations of peaceful responses.

DAY 6 Feb. 4: The practice for today is SIMPLICITY. To simplify is to invite peacefulness into your life. When we have lots of 'stuff' in our lives, it can be hard to be peaceful. Close your eyes and ask "How can I simplify my life, what can I let go of?"

"Live simply, so others can simply live."
-Traditional Quaker guidance

If we dare let go of our possessions and the will to control and dominate, we will cultivate a deeper spirit of peace within ourselves. By simplifying our lives, dropping less important activities and 'things', we allow more time for what matters most. We can consider the idea of accepting the present moment as a gift.

Today: I will write down three ways I can simplify my life and put at least one of them into practice today. I will give away something I have not used in the past year.

DAY 7 Feb. 5: The practice for today is EDUCATION. Knowledge strengthens your conviction and deepens your understanding and acceptance. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, "We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education." The complete education teaches how to live by the principles which benefit us and the people around us.

Learn about the power of nonviolence by educating yourself. Read an article, periodical or book; watch a video on a subject that relates to nonviolence. Learn about human rights, justice, diversity, ecology, history, forgiveness, spirituality, peace studies, biographies of heroes and more.

Today: I consciously expand my knowledge about nonviolence. I will share what I have learned with at least three other people, and invite them to learn, too. (Suggestions: Watch the video "A Force More Powerful" and/or "Gandhi"; read the book "Nonviolence" by Kurlanski, and/or "Nonviolent Communication" by Marshall Rosenberg.)

The Lord's Prayer

The Lord's Prayer

Traditional

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name!

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Lead us not into temptation

but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory forever.

Amen

Ancient Aramaic language
translated by Rocco Errico

O cosmic Birther of all radiance and vibration!
Soften the ground of our being and carve out a space within us where your Presence can abide.
Fill us with your creativity so that we may be empowered to bear the fruit of our mission.
Let each of our actions bear fruit in accordance with our desire.
Endow us with the wisdom to produce and share what each being needs to grow and flourish.
Untie the tangled threads of destiny that bind us, as we release others from the entanglement of past mistakes.
Do not let us be seduced by that which would divert us from our true purpose, but illuminate the opportunities of the present moment.
For you are the ground and the fruitful vision, the birth power and the fulfillment, as all is gathered and made whole once again.

Amen

The Lord's Prayer

Law of Attraction, by Tom Utley

Source Energy, which is the universe, Manifestation is your name.

Your energy is come,

Your thoughts are created

in Life as it is in the universe.

Manifest in us our highest desires,

That we may overcome our negative thoughts

as we also avoid the negativity of others.

Lead us into positive expectations

that we may experience the highest good.

For Source Energy is the reality, and Creative Source and fulfillment of all that it is.

And so it is. Amen

A Prayer for the World

by Rabbi Harold S. Kushner

Let the rain come and wash away

the ancient grudges, the bitter hatreds

held and nurtured over generations.

Let the rain wash away the memory of the hurt, the neglect.

Then let the sun come out and

fill the sky with rainbows.

Let the warmth of the sun heal us

wherever we are broken.

Let it burn away the fog so that

we can see each other clearly.

So that we can see beyond labels,

beyond accents, gender or skin color.

Let the warmth and brightness

of the sun melt our selfishness.

So that we can share the joys and

feel the sorrow of our neighbors.

And let the light of the sun

be so strong that we will see all

people as our neighbors.

Let the earth, nourished by rain,

bring forth flowers

to surround us with beauty.

And let the mountains teach our hearts

to reach upward to heaven.

Amen.

Prayer for Today

  by Reverend Chris Chenoweth

Today, I am walking in the light of God's goodness. In my mind's eye, I see myself as walking along the path of continuous good. I see my life as taking a straight and true course, one blessed by the continuous good of God. I see myself, and all who share my life, as walking together in harmony.

I am working in the light of the goodness of God. I see myself as accomplishing with speed and spring of spirit doing the good work that is mine to do this day. Whatever the task, I see it as an opportunity.

I see the light of God's good shining in and through me, and within all that I work with, making the time that we spend together a time of wondrous good. I see good in all my co-workers and in my company. I am filled with new understanding and satisfaction.

Today I choose to live in the light of God's good. What a wonderfully glorious revelation it is to know that the good of God is an eternal part of me. I am never in darkness: always I am one with good. I am one with good that never diminishes. I decree in the name of Jesus Christ my pronouncement of my life as good. I am walking, working, living in the continuous good of God.

Thank you God!  Amen.

Prayer for Others

by Rev. Chris Chenoweth

We pray for others today, thinking especially of the names and needs of those who are dear to our hearts. Though they may be many miles apart, though they may have differing viewpoints and ideas, in spirit we are one. As faces come to mind, as needs touch our hearts, we silently can be God's love to each one as we pray:

"We pray for you with a love-filled heart, and a faith-filled spirit. We see you poised and at peace in mind and body, meeting the challenges of your life with strength and courage. We see you working with God in all ways. We see you free from all that limits you, or keeps you from expressing your highest and best self. We see you walking in the light of God, guided by God, with a smile on your face and a spring in your step. We see you the way God sees you -- the way you want to see yourself -- as a victorious child of God!

In Jesus Christ's name we pray for you....Amen"

"I envision my loved ones healthy, happy and secure."

from Daily Word, November 30, 2004

Dear God, today I open my heart and mind to you. I pray for guidance and wisdom, for strength and peace. I am grateful for the rich blessings I have experienced and for the ones that I know are coming.

Dear God, as I speak the names of my loved ones in prayer, I envision them with complete peace of mind. I see them happy and safe. I give thanks that answers to prayer come in the perfect way and in the right time for each one of my loved ones.

Dear God, I pray for the people of my community, my nation, and my world. I hold a vision of all citizens and leaders not only open to Your guidance but also following it. I affirm that peace reigns in the hearts and lives of all humanity as each person's awareness of Your presence grows. Your presence is felt by all and expressed by all as love and acceptance among Your family.

Praying for Others Today

by Rev. Chris Chenoweth

As we pray for others today, let us do so in a positive spirit and with a feeling of joyous expectation. We believe in the power of prayer, and we believe in those for whom you pray. We see them as children of God and know that they have infinite power and possibility. Our prayer is that they may be awakened to the spiritual power that is with them and within them. We pray that with God's help they will know how strong they really are and how much inner strength they have with which to meet life and to cope with its challenges.

As we pray for others today, we see them as healthy, happy, and free. We see them looking to God as their help in every need. We see them as capable, independent spiritual beings, living productive, fulfilling lives.

God is with these dear ones. Always these dear ones are in God's loving care. God guides them in doing the right thing and in doing it at the right time.

We pray for their guidance and peace of mind, and for that God-given power for the expression of right and loving actions.

We call on the healing energy of God to revitalize each of our loved ones. As we relax into total trust in God, we cooperate with them allowing God's healing energy to infuse every cell, muscle, and organ in the bodies, and minds of those for whom we pray.

This healing energy of God moves freely in through them. They realize the activity of God's healing energy as increased strength, as renewed relationships, and as unlimited inspiration. We thank you God, for your abiding healing presence in us and working through us to heal others.

St. Theresa Prayer

May today there be peace within us.

May we trust our highest power that we are exactly

where we are meant to be.

May we not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith.

May we use those gifts that we have received,

and pass on the love that has been given to us.

May we be content knowing we are children of God.

Let this presence settle into our bones,

and allow our souls the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love.

It is there for each and every one of us now.

I am here only to be truly helpful.

I am here to represent him who sent me.

I do not have to worry about what to say or what to do,

Twenty-third Psalm

The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me lie down in green pastures; he leads my beside the still waters.

He restores my soul; he leads me in the paths of righteousness of his name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.

Where there is hatred, let me sow love.

Where there is injury, pardon.

Where there is doubt, faith.

Where there is despair, hope.

Where there is darkness, light.

Where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

To be understood as to understand;

To be loved as to love;

For it is in giving that we receive.

It is in pardoning that I am pardoned.

It is in dying that I am born to eternal life.

No Other Way

by Martha Smock

Could we but see the pattern of our days,
We should discern how devious were the ways
By which we came to this, the present time,
This place in life; and we should see the climb
Our soul has made up through the years.

We should forget the hurts, the wanderings, the fears,
The wastelands of our life, and know
That we could come no other way or grow
Into our good without these steps our feet
Found hard to take, our faith found hard to meet.

The road of life winds on, and we like travelers go
From turn to turn until we come to know
The truth that life is endless and that we
Forever are inhabitants of all eternity.

Thoughts about Katrina

by Cecile Ozley

Thinking of Katrina brings such sadness in my soul;

The destruction and devastation have taken a great toll.

I sit and remember what this hurricane has brought;

More extensive and damaging than anyone thought.

Hiding, escaping, then fleeing for life;

Obstacles continued creating great strife.

Boats, planes and helicopters preparing a way,

As cities prepare places for homeless to stay.

This is the week that heroes were made;

Rescuing, in spite of danger, seemingly unafraid.

Now is the time when we can do our part;

Assisting our neighbors in making a fresh start.

God, we need direction, focus and heart;

Yet, we know a simple “first step” is the place to start.

Bless these victims, relocated to Cedar Hill;

As we provide for their care, in accordance with your will.

Healing Words

Rev. Ellen Debenport,
Senior Minister, Unity Church of Dallas

Seems that summer is the time when a lot of people have medical work performed. Some call it a procedure, some call it surgery. Many call it scary.

No matter how prayed-up we feel, no matter how long we have studied spiritual principles, it seems that nothing ignites fear as quickly as a medical problem. Being told that your body has gone haywire or you need surgery can evoke a dread and powerlessness unlike anything else.

You know the usual admonitions: pray, ask for support and know that all is well. But I also want to share with you a healing practice that I love and have used. It comes from Rev. Cherie Larkin of Unity in Nashville, who faced open-heart surgery some years ago.

Before the surgery, Cherie’s doctor gave her a video showing exactly what would happen during the procedure. Cherie watched it, then she watched it again with her body. She talked to her body as if it were a child. “Look at this -- this is what is going to happen. See how careful the doctor is. See how the problem is being fixed.”

Cherie, who tells this story in workshops on healing, says the body doesn’t know the difference between a surgeon’s scalpel or being knifed in a dark alley. It reacts as if attacked. So she spoke to her body over and over, explaining that the doctors were going to help, that this was a friendly procedure. She even told her body there was no need for bruising and urged it to heal quickly. She healed in record time and amazed the doctors.

Our bodies hear every word we say, and they are eager to cooperate. That’s why it is so important to keep our words and thoughts positive and to enlist our bodies in the quest for health. Myrtle Fillmore, Unity’s co-founder, cured herself of tuberculosis by affirming radiant health and also by asking her body’s forgiveness because she had bombarded it with unkind, resentful thoughts for so many years.

Healing is a miracle of divine energy that we only dimly understand. I firmly believe that someday we will use thought to heal our bodies routinely. We have volunteered to live in these physical vehicles designed for the human experience. We need only remember that they are exquisitely responsive to the healing power of God and that their natural state is wholeness. As we set aside fearful thoughts, we allow healing to take place.

Inspiration Point: Coping With Disappointment

by Eric Butterworth

Unity minister Eric Butterworth, 86, Theologian, Lecturer, and Author of 16 books died April 17, 2003. He inspired hundreds of thousands with his message that positive attitudes create personal renewal. His congregation was Unity Center of NY; his pulpit, New York's Lincoln Center. The following is reprinted with his permission.

I love the story Charles Edison, former Gov. of New Jersey, tells of his father, Thomas Edison. He says in 1914 when the Edison Industries of West Orange, New Jersey were practically destroyed by a great fire, most of Edison's life work was going up in flames. So the young man, concerned, looked about for his father and he finally came upon him. The man's face was ruddy in the glow of the flames. He wrote, "My heart ached for him, no longer a young man, everything being destroyed." Then he says, "My father spotted me and he called out, 'Charles, Charles, run get your mother. She will never see anything as beautiful as this fire as long as she lives.'"

So, even in its destructiveness, Edison saw the beauty of the fire because, you see, he was a researcher. He'd spent all of his life learning how to cope with disappointment. The next morning, walking about the charred embers of all of his dreams, Edison said, "There's great value in disaster because all of our mistakes are burned out. Thank God we can start again!" Three weeks later the Edison Company delivered the first phonograph.

You might say, "But Edison was an unusual man. He was different. He was special." Or, we say of Jesus, "But he was the son of God." But Jesus said, "All that I do you can do too."

Each of us has the God potential within to rise above any and all disappointment. In life you will have many trying times but there is a tremendous capacity within us to rise above any situation, any challenge, any limitation. Always we must know that if I'm discouraged or disappointed it's not because of what happened, it is a result of my own consciousness, my own negative awareness. You can decide that you're going to meet all things from the highest possible perspective. Your job is not to "set" things right but to "see" them right.

I am conscious that I have a role in the unfolding story of humanity. I am connected to the whole. My intentions find a deep resonance in the hearts and minds of others.

Together, we stir the depths of human ingenuity, creativity, and collective healing. Together, we are part of an evolutionary pulse bringing into focus our collective responsibility for planet Earth and its diverse peoples.

My intention is to be in a place of wisdom, compassion, and abiding exuberance for serving our common work and the greater good.

Who Are We?

from A Return to Love

by Marianne Williamson

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.

It is our light, not our Darkness, that most frightens us.

We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?

Actually, who are you NOT to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you.

We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.

It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.

And as we let our own Light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

NOTE: This passage was quoted by Nelson Mandela in a speech and is sometimes incorrectly attributed to him.
